I handle both halves, and I don't put a booking pop-up on a page where it would be actively inappropriate.

Yes. Either through the booking system you already use, set up so it doesn't slow the page, or through an enquiry-first route where a booking button would feel wrong. For many practices a clear phone number and a short form convert better than a calendar.
